For a second, Will didn’t respond. His eyes shone, full of tears that refused to fall. He knelt
down too, never taking his eyes off him.
“Mike…” he let out a broken laugh.
“God, you’re incredibly unfair." He nodded, already crying.
“Yes. Yes. A thousand times yes.” He took the ring with trembling hands.
“Yes,Michael Wheeler," he repeated, his voice breaking.
“I will marry you.”
Mike stood up immediately and pulled him into a tight embrace, as if he were afraid he’d disappear if he let go. Will buried his face in his neck, laughing and crying at the sametime. Distant applause echoed behind them, but Mike didn’t hear anything else. He only felt Will. His warmth. His breathing.

Will smiled, pleased at that. “I do know,” he said loftily, and Mike got the sense he really did, and frequently used it against him to get his way. “But I like it when you tell me.”

Will furrows his brow. “Okay.”
Mike pauses in the doorway, raising an eyebrow, and Will mouths Hop at him. He hovers at their kitchen threshold, arms crossed and eyes on Will, mirroring his concerned expression.
There’s a beat of silence, then more static, like Hopper’s letting out a deep breath.
“It’s Chester, kid,” he finally says.

William got to his feet and turned around, prayer book clutched to his chest. Michael was standing in the center of the chapel, obviously just come from sparring practice. He was still wearing his dented cuirass, a leather pauldron on his right shoulder. The moonlight through the stained-glass windows painted him in blue and gold.
“Forgot to leave your armor behind in the gymnasium?” asked William lightly, skirting around him to set the prayer book back in its tabernacle.
“Something like that,” said Michael. He stepped out of the shaft of light, joining William at the perimeter of the circular room.
William closed the ornate wooden door of the tabernacle and turned to face him. “How did you know I’d be here?”
“I know you,” Michael said simply. I love you, he might as well have said, for the way it sent William’s heart skittering inside his chest.
Michael has been betrothed to the princess since their infancy. But it’s her brother he really wants.

“We’re supposed to be a team,” Will repeats, his voice trembling yet still a bit angry. His eyes are narrowed at Mike—defensive but still on guard, wounded but still ready to fight.
It’s familiar. Somehow, the two of them always end up like this.

Summary
Mike (idiot that he is) still doesn't know what this unnameable thing is, but what he does know is that it's always been there. Has always been inside of him, has always swirled within the depths of his chest, and has always tried to make itself known whenever he was (and is) in the presence of Will Byers.
But seeing Will in this new light was the equivalent of being whacked across the head with a baseball bat. A baseball bat built solely to amplify any and all already present feelings, making them impossible to ignore. Suddenly, the thing inside him wasn’t quiet anymore. No, it was (and is) loud. Loud enough to override all the other thoughts that should be occupying his brain space right now, and loud enough that even he can’t shove it back into whatever mental closet he’d kept it in.
OR: Mike doesn't clock it. Robin does.

"It's not just anything." Mike turned to look at him, and they were suddenly very close, close enough that Will could see the darker flecks in Mike's eyes, could count his freckles if he wanted to. "You're incredible. You know that, right?"
Will couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Could only stare at Mike's face inches from his own and try to remember why leaning forward would be a terrible idea.
Mike's eyes dropped to Will's mouth for just a second. Maybe it wasn't so terrible of an idea. It would be so easy... to reach out and touch.
Then Mike was pulling back, clearing his throat, looking flustered. "Anyway. Um. Should we-"
What happened in those 18 months in the Wheeler house between S4 and S5 that made Will so hopeful... or, as the kids call it, MWTFDYD Gate.

It hits him when he’s packing her lunch.
Its not the first time he’s done it. It’s the fourth, actually. She’s been here, with him, a little over a week. Nancy, his mom, and his dad have been dead a little over a month now. Holly wants peanut butter and nutella on her sandwich, and he knows for a fact Mom never let her have peanut butter and nutella. Too much sugar. Mom is dead.
He spreads peanut butter on one side. A little less nutella on the other. Wonders if he’s doing this wrong, if Mom had a special way of making sandwiches that he suddenly can’t remember.
Something drips off of his chin. Hits his wrist. Itches a little. Dries there. Oh. He’s crying.
OR
Mike takes custody of Holly after the death of their parents and older sister. He, Will and Holly are all just figuring it out as they go.
