Family is a sensitive subject- Ilya hardly ever talks about his brother or father, but once in a while he’ll mention his mother in passing. He’ll do it so casually it almost always takes Yuna aback to remember she’s not alive.

My mother loved poetry. She could recite her favorite poems by heart.

Yuna began to think of Irina while she was working in her garden.
Did you see Ilya today? Him and Shane looked so handsome together.
Ilya made us laugh so hard today. I bet you were as quick witted as he is.
Ilya’s having a hard time right now, Irina. I’m doing what I can, we’re doing what we can. I wish I could call you and ask for advice.
He seems better. Does he talk to you? I hope so.
Irina, Mother’s Day is coming up. I have an idea.

I woke up with an idea for a fic of Ilya in The Family Man (the 2000 movie with Nic Cage,) then immediately nixed it because it’d be incredibly short with no tension because Ilya would be like hell yeah no further questions, your honor.
Then I decided to write it anyway because you know what, we all deserve a little sweet treat.

“Hayden,” Jackie began gently. “I need you to see past the Rozanov you thought you knew. I need you to see where this is going- where this really looks like it’s going. They’re in love. If they get married- if they have a family- don’t you want to be around for that? Don’t you want to be Uncle Hayden to their kids? Or do you want to keep sniping at Ilya until Shane’s had enough and doesn’t invite you over anymore?”
(She doesn’t say invite “us” over, because she knows that Shane would definitely still invite Jackie over, and she would go without Hayden, with absolutely no qualms about it.)
Hayden shuts his eyes and there’s a clear picture already there.
Their four kids, a little older, running around, followed by a curly headed toddler on unsteady chubby legs. Maybe Shane holding a mini him, a baby with tufts of straight black hair sticking out everywhere. Okay. Yeah. He wants to be there for that. For his best friend. He wants whatever Shane wants.
