Summary
“I’m not leaving,” he says, “But we don’t have to talk about it right now if you don’t want. Becca’s all taken care of, and Emma’s getting her discharged. Okay?”
Despite everything, she nods.
“Okay.”
Langdon smiles, the left corner of his lips pulling gently to the side, awkward and earnest, and sits—crisscross applesauce, Mel thinks— in front of her. “Okay about Becca, or okay let’s talk?”
Mel takes a deep breath in. She thinks about the photo on her phone, arms wound tightly around her father’s bicep, and the petulant feeling in her gut on the swing set. She thinks about the burning feeling she would get whenever she saw Becca leap through the air, looking for all the world like an angel, setting sun lighting her brunette pigtails into a vibrant orange, and names it.
Envy.
She exhales slowly.
“Okay,” Mel says, finally looking at Langdon directly. “Okay, let’s talk.”

Summary
"Significant pulmonary contusion and multiple rib fractures, and there's very likely a subdural hematoma in there too,” Garcia says grimly, sounding like she's citing it to herself rather than to anyone else in the room. “We’re lucky it's most probably small, but given her fluctuating GCS it still concerns me quite a bit. Also, besides the shard of metal, the bruising and swelling along her abdomen suggests the possibility of internal bleeding as well, but we need to get in the OR to fully evaluate the severity of it."
“Jesus King,” he murmurs. “You were supposed to have the day off.”
or: there's a car accident on mel's day off. she ends up at the pitt anyways.

Summary
Dr. Frank Langdon doesn’t get distracted—not during trauma codes, not during twelve-hour shifts, and definitely not by residents. But something about Mel King is unraveling that discipline. She’s quiet, capable, kind, sharp under pressure… and lately, impossible to ignore. He should be focused on protocol, patients, and keeping his hands to himself. But after an incident in an on call decon shower, the line he’s not supposed to cross is starting to look awfully thin.
