Summary
With her focus solely on Steve and his condition, she didn’t realize the entire other person occupying the second bed in the room, not until the door was slamming open and a teary eyed Wayne Munson was rushing to this person’s bedside. After taking a longer glance at the bed, and seeing the unmistakable long curls of his nephew she understands completely. Suddenly it feels like her lungs are collapsing, but instead of falling apart she takes a steadying breath and goes to sit by her son. Steve’s hands are a little clammy and his nails are bitten to hell, a nervous habit he’s never been able to kick despite how many times she’d call him on it. There are for sure healthier ways to deal with these situations, but Louise can’t help the humorless laugh that leaves her lips, “What the hell did our boys get themselves into Wayne?” Her tears now finally falling freely. If she didn’t know him as well as she does she wouldn't have made out the near imperceptive grunt of agreement as he acknowledges her question.
Or relationships get revealed and it's clear family doesn't fall far from the tree

Both kids are staring at the Harrington door, almost daring it to open itself. After a few more minutes and a reassuring nudge from Max, Dustin rolls his shoulders back, takes a deep breath, and knocks probably a little more subdued than he would normally. And going by the concerned and confused look Steve is giving them, the abnormal Dustin behavior is absolutely being noticed.
Or it was until Steve spots his bat at Max’s side, “What the fuck Mayfield? I’ve been looking for that everywhere!” Steve’s pinching his nose with one hand while his other lands on his hip. “I swear to god one of you little shits is going to be the death of me, but for real this time! Is this what you’re being so weird about?”
Dustin sighs and shakes his head slowly, “No but think you could let us in? Would rather not have the whole town hear my business if that pleases his highness.”
“Jesus Christ with the dramatics already,” Steve huffs but still moves aside letting them pass, not before taking the bat from Max and putting it in its spot beside the door.

With Eddie and Steve getting stuck in a snowstorm Wayne assumes he's going to be alone for the holiday, but fate has a funny way of surprising Wayne in the form of his angsty neighbor.
“Merry Christmas Miss Max, I hate to impose on you and your ma, but I was wondering if you would be interested in joining me for dinner? It ain’t much but I’d be a much less lonely old man with your company.” Wayne gently asks her.
He catches Max’s shoulders square, and Christ does this kid remind him of when Eddie came round in the beginning. Closed off, self defensive, looking like she’s carrying the whole world on those small shoulders.
Max is giving him the most calculated look, sizing him up, looking for something. She must find it because she sighs and her shoulders slump. She crosses her arms tight against herself. “It’s just me actually.” -

“Didn’t you listen to your voicemail?” Dustin asks, and no. He hadn’t. He’d seen ‘code red’ and started panicking.
“It’s… Eddie, it’s Steve,” says Dustin, and he sounds small. Eddie’s heart gives a kick at the mention of Steve’s name, and sinks to the bottom of his stomach.
“What’s Steve?” Eddie asks, needing to understand what’s happening. He doesn’t like the tone Dustin is using. It’s scaring him. “What’s going on?”--------
Soulmates aren't a sure thing. It's up to the universe to decide that you are exactly the right person for another at exactly the right time. For Eddie, the right time came at thirty-two years old, had felt completely wrong, and he has managed to (mostly) ignore it for another three years. Ignoring it might be the cause of the problem.
