Pretty because of the leaves, animals, flowers, and the goodwill of the season—winter days brought children lost in the slush, bodies found in the snow. Spring days bring missing cats, adultery, and petty theft. Easy, fluffy crimes that make Pete’s life easier.
The woman in front of him decidedly doesn’t have one of those.

Vanya remembered how she had stood and watched her siblings talk, play, and joke with no idea how to join in. No idea how to be part of their tight-knit group, wondering where they'd all picked up the unspoken rules. Usually, she just echoed one of her siblings or kept quiet.
