Summary
The café was the favorite for an odd couple. The owner had watched them with great interest over the years that they had been patrons. In the first year, they came separately, never running into each other. The shorter of the two, a man who was often dressed in black and white attire, often came in on the evenings. During the warmer months, an albino snake accompanied him – sometimes wrapped around his neck and other times nestled within the sleeves of his haori. Clearly, the man was returning from some work and came to spend an hour or two of his evenings. Even though the man's mouth was wrapped in bandages, the coffees he ordered were always finished by the time he left....When Mitsuri came alone, sometimes she brought a sketch pad and drew. After the owner asked her about her art, she blushed and said that she hoped to be a painter. A wistful look came over her as she spoke, as if this dream was far away and unattainable. The owner and wait staff didn’t know how the two had met or where they worked. There was a secretive air to it, yet it did not feel like they were involved in some sort of illegal business.

"It was as he lay there that he became aware of an odd sound which emanated from elsewhere in the apartment. The noise was of something being crunched down on and slurped up. Something was being eaten with impunity. There was a satisfied tone to the slurps, as if whatever was doing the devouring was having the time of its life as it dug in."
After a night of drinking, Obanai wakes up to hear odd noises coming from the kitchen. He ventures forth to discover the source of the mysterious sounds.

With a decisive chomp!, Mitsuri dug in. The first bite was the messiest as she tore into the burger. She ripped out a chunk of Angus beef that was chased down with a bite of tomato and lettuce. Drops of sauce and meat juices dribbled down her chin onto her strategically placed napkin as she tore into the burger. Shinobu and Tamayo held off on beginning to eat as they watched in awe. It never got old watching Mitsuri eat. The woman was insatiable. Sure, she had her favorite dishes. Yet, there was hardly anything she would not eat. The challenge burger was her latest victim as it was mercilessly scarfed down.
Needing a break from studying, Mitsuri sets her eyes upon a burger!

It's just two weak pillars supporting one another. What difference does it make if they get married?
From the perspective of canon, not much. They are so low-key about the relationship that not even all the other Hashira know about it. Giyuu and Shinobu promised one another to prioritize their demon slaying missions, but that locus of priority can make it difficult to navigate their roles as spouses. What happens with their missions is of no real concern to the other, right? Maybe they both need to talk more, before they find bigger things to argue about than fictional baby names.This is the chronological version of my somewhat popular Tumblr-based AU, with doodles showing how this sort of lens through which to view canon either makes everything funnier or much more painful. The doodles will be posted here as relevant, but long-time followers of the AU have lots of new material to look forward to.
