Pete knows there is no good reason to be counting. It doesn't help anyone.
Counting the number of days doesn't change the fact that Vegas remains unconscious. Counting the number of days doesn't change the fact that Macau is becoming more and more withdrawn with each passing day. Counting does not change Porsche's appearances; every other day, reminding everyone he is being supportive.
It causes nothing but pain to count, like Pete is scratching each number into a concrete wall with his fingernails, but he continues to count anyway.
