Summary
Lizzy couldn’t stop the tears streaming down her cheeks.
Theo was looking at her with complete and earnest love, and she felt like her heart might explode. She knew she would never feel something so precious again.
And now she had to lose it all. Again.
“What’s wrong?” he asked as he delicately wiped away her tears. “Lizzy? What’s the matter?”

Summary
When she’d woken, it felt like there was a shift in the air in the house. Everything was... still.
She got dressed, padded downstairs and made her way to the dining room for breakfast.
To her surprise, Nan sat alone at the head of the table, calmly sipping a cup of tea.
“Nan.” she greeted with a small smile, taking a seat to her left. “I thought you would be back at Tintagel or your London residence.”
“I’m about to leave for our townhouse, Theo is back in Tintagel. I just wanted to see you before I go.”
Nan reached into her small purse and lifted something out before sliding it across the table to Lizzy.

“You haven’t asked why I’m here.”
“I’m just grateful that you are.” His voice broke. “These past few weeks... not being able to hold you... I—” The words failed him, but Lizzy seemed to understand. She stepped into him, burying her face his chest.

She stopped the croquet ball with the tip of her shoe before kicking it straight back to him. He was crouched over in front of her, organising the balls when it struck his mallet.
He paused, slowly turned around, and a smile broke across his face.
He rarely smiled like that. He always seemed to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. A quiet privilege settled over her, knowing that she was the cause of his happiness.

She lay on her stomach beside him, her eyes closed and a serenely soft smile on her lips. Lips he had claimed as his own again and again, because kissing her was quickly becoming his favourite thing to do. The breathless ghost of her lips against as time itself felt like it paused, before she melted into him completely.
She. Lizzy Elmsworth.

Summary
Their timing was never right.
Except for one night. Their timing could not have been more insane.
The universe heard her desire to keep Matt Casey in her life and it made sure that he had that permanent spot... as the father of her children.
Everyone had questioned even more after that why they never gave things a go. It seemed like the universe was shining a big neon light saying - THIS IS YOUR PERSON – but it never quite worked out like that.

Summary
Emma was wiser now. Working with this team had somehow made her more self-aware. That she needed to own her decisions. That sometimes the ideals she built up in her head could never exist.
Should never exist.
And that maybe the ideal wasn’t what she thought it was. Maybe the ideal was something else entirely. Something that had caught her completely off guard.
Or someone.

Summary
"Matt was immediately overwhelmed with love and gratefulness for this woman. For making their daughter feel so safe in her arms.
He looked over his shoulder, the light of the TV coming from the living room where Ben and Griffin sat. His boys had safe space too.
It struck Matt in that moment just how safe he felt too. For the first time in his life. He was safe. Through the turmoil of his childhood and his past relationships and all that the job threw at him – he had made it, with the most remarkable woman he got to call his wife. She changed his world in a way he never thought he’d have."

Meant to Be
“Sylvie Brett; we’re meant to be. Will you make me, and three kids, the luckiest family in the world? Marry me.”
Sylvie’s heart thumped in her chest.
She could have sworn he’d just said marry me.
She looked him up and down. He was on one knee, a box open in his hands... he had asked her to marry him.
The realisation that she wasn’t dreaming sunk in as her eyes glistened with tears. This was not supposed to be her reality. Not anymore. Yet here he was, looking her with complete awe etched across his face.
How could someone as good as Matt Casey be in awe of her?

Summary
Logic seemed to fly out the window when it came to them.
Oh, you have feelings for each other? You should definitely spend the next three years pining after each other instead of being together! Maybe date a few other people in there too!
Oh, you have two young boys in need of a home? Sure, you’ve just started dating, why not bring them all the way to Chicago and become parents to two teenagers!?
Oh, you want to move in together? You should definitely buy a home that’s basically falling apart for the four of you to live in!
However illogical or unconventional the past four years of their lives had been, they wouldn’t change a thing. Their relationship was built on the firm foundation of their friendship, and they loved the boys more than anything. They’d built a life together, and while it wasn’t what they’d imagined. It was still theirs.

Summary
Violet wished she had the words to make this situation better for Sylvie. She wished she had words other than wanting to scream at the top of her lungs that she and Casey could make this work. That they would make this work – but that wasn’t what she needed right now. She just needed an ear. That had to be enough for the moment.
“Maybe someday, right?” Sylvie said, clearly trying to find a silver lining, but Violet could tell that she didn’t mean it. The pain she was feeling glistened in her eyes.
The bells rang, signalling an end to Sylvie’s confessional. Violet watched as her partner wiped her cheeks before turning the engine on and springing into gear.
Even in her most difficult moments, Sylvie was ever the professional.

Summary
In the aftermath of Andy Darden’s death, Severide wasn’t sure he and Casey could ever get here. If they could ever get back to a place of cigar smoking. What he didn’t see happening at all, however, was them sitting here smoking cigars, talking about their five amazing kids that they shared with the loves of the lives.
For Matt, it seemed like a pipe dream and for Severide, it seemed like something he wasn’t capable of.
Yet they did it. They’d raised five strong, compassionate, brilliant humans.
It was easily the greatest source of pride in their lives.

Summary
When they danced together at Stella and Severide’s wedding the following evening, there was a touch of sadness to it, with the knowledge that they would have to be apart for a little while. But it wasn’t forever, and they were forever. That knowledge comforted them as the world fell away and it was just them, her head resting delicately on his shoulder and his hand pressing her tightly against him.
Stella’s vows also rang true to them:
“Yes, we are taking a huge, crazy leap into the unknown, but we’re doing it together.”

Summary
She wished she could just be in this moment with Matt, but the reality of them having to be apart for a while was hitting her full force as they gently swayed together. She rested her head beside his and closed her eyes, letting out a deep breath. After a few moments of silence, Matt spoke quietly in her ear:
“It’s going to be ok.”

Summary
“Now who’s taking a trip down memory lane?” Sylvie challenged with a quirk of her brow.
Matt cleared his throat, “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about that kiss every damn day.”
Sylvie blushed and quickly looked away. Matt smirked. She clearly thought about it a lot too.
“Well, I never expected the sweet, quiet contractor I met that night to kiss me like that.” She confessed. She looked up at him through her lashes, “I never expected that sweet, quiet contractor to be a CIA operative either.”

Summary
The first time he saw her, he’d been in a rush and the sight of her sitting in an armchair by the window had slowed him further.
Not that he cared. He was too captivated by her to care.
This was his favourite coffee shop. It was equal distance from his home and the firehouse, and they did the best coffee and hot cocoa in the city. But in the few years that he’d been coming here, he’d never seen her before – and she was the kind of person you noticed.
She had a book on her lap and a mug in her hand and those two simple things somehow made her exude serenity. She looked like she could happily and peacefully sit in that spot for hours and feel no urgency to move. Unlike him. He always felt like he had fires to put out – figuratively and literally.

Summary
“Merry Christmas everyone!”
The members of 51 who were sitting in the lounge turned around at the sound of the little voice to see Charlie running in dressed up as a Christmas angel – tinsel halo and all - with a gift bag firmly in her grip. They all beamed at her and greeted her excitedly back. It was December 23rd, and despite being so close to Christmas, there was very little Christmas spirit in the room.
They’d had a busy day already and couldn’t quite find the energy to celebrate the holidays, but now Charlie was here, and her spirit could easily brighten up anybody’s day – especially her Christmas Spirit.

Summary
Six calls and it was barely noon.
Sylvie didn’t need this today.
As much as she loved her job, there were days when she just wanted to go home and curl up on the couch with something sweet and HGTV. Today was one of those days, and of course it would be a day that she and Violet were run off their feet. In a way, the distraction of work had been good, but not enough for her to be grateful for it. Not when she couldn’t still her thoughts no matter how hard she tried.
It had been this way for a few months now. She had a lot to think about, a lot to work on, a lot to consider – and it was the anticipation that came with it all that was causing her the most chaos in the life she had spent three years getting comfortable with.
