Months of them like this – a meandering flow into this something that was now between them. At first, it was so slow John almost didn’t notice they were changing how they were with each other after all these years. After a while, when he realised he wasn’t imagining it, that something new and good and warm and lush was unfolding, he thought that there would one day be a sudden shift. Hands down pants, tongues in mouths.
What happened was nothing like that, was intricate and delicate and perfect, and by the time it had woven its way into John he didn’t even care anymore that he thought in such terms. It was good.

He’s trying to bake some Christmas cookies for his kids, he’s planning his gifts that he hasn’t already bought, he’s finally starting to feel the holiday spirit, and he’s on Facetime with Patrick while they’re both doing other things. It’s a nice, Christmas adjacent kind of day.
“Pete - whatever happened to that song you wrote?”
In 2003, Pete very stupidly tried to write Patrick a song for Christmas, and lied to him about it. 20 years later, the truth comes out.
