Summary
Terminally bored office worker Harper Praise chats with random people online to stave off her desire to die. By chance, she meets Van Der Gramme, a brashly egotistical pornographic artist who quickly becomes the sole interesting facet of Harper's nothing life. Chasing after him, she plunges into his online underworld of depravity and degeneracy, over which he presides like a spiritual guru—or a cult leader. Sex and art are the saviors he peddles, his medicine, his opiates, and Harper is desperate to surrender to them. But the real world—no matter how banal it seems—refuses to loosen its death grip so easily. By the end, everything will burn.

I have a friend who's a little bit obsessed with works that have A Place. Not just rendering a specific location with maximal realism, but capturing it's Essence. Showing how that place *feels* even when reality doesn't meet it.
This is, among other things, A Time.
If you happen to be someone like me, I thoroughly recommend this.

Summary
In the 1960's, the "Prince of Darkness" (interpretations vary) stole the moon and created a permanent solar eclipse in Brazil, for the purposes of opening a portal to Hell and probably conquering Earth (exact purpose still unknown.) Thirty-five years later things are kinda normal and the cities that were conquered in the Hell War are kinda back to normal and the country has been remade as New Brazil. One of these cities is Madragonica (the Infernal name stuck.)
Now it's 1997.
Temperance Demonte is being sent from Rome to Madragonica as a university exchange student. Her family is trying to sweep the many scandals the stupid girl has caused under the rug. Said famiy is an ancient Vatican-backed knight order that helped the UN coalition during the Hell War.
Luce Riley is a TA at Bene Dictus University in Madragonica. She moonlights as a member of an international assassins' guild known only as the Old Guard. She is also hiding a dark past involving an Mk Ultra supersoldier programme, which has granted her unnatural abilities.
They are going to fall in love the way a derailing train falls off the Viaduc de Garabit.
