    Once, John said to Lemar Hoskins, "If Sisyphus could push a boulder up a hill over and over again without ever giving up, then so can I. Otherwise, Mike would be disappointed in me."

    "First of all, John, Sisyphus was punished by having to push that boulder endlessly. But you haven’t done anything wrong. So why are you punishing yourself like this?"

    Under the scorching Afghan sun, John paused as he cleaned the barrel of his rifle. But even so, he set his work aside and gave Lemar a thumbs-up.

    "It’s fine. If I give it my all and get it to the top, then it’s not a punishment. And if there’s a new boulder waiting, I’ll just start pushing again until I get it to the top."

    .....

    Or just the idea of John Walker comparing his own life to the punishment of Sisyphus.
