Summary
For Shane Hollander, life has always been about playing a part. On the ice, he plays the best (or second best, depending on who you ask) hockey player in a generation. With his family, he plays the role of golden boy - kind and resilient and responsible. Even with Ilya, Shane has a part to play; reliable, happy, secure.
But after the big move to Ottawa and a summer full of life changes, Shane can't catch his footing. This is supposed to be the start to the best chapter of his life – so why does he feel like he's drowning?

Summary
Ilya's hand continues its path up and down Shane's back, and Shane thinks again about how love is sometimes just this: a palm on the spine, moving in circles, waiting for you to come back to yourself. There is no promise of saving you—Ilya cannot save him, they both know this and are alright with it in their own ways—but there is a vow of staying, lingering in order to witness. Touching the bruise so that its pain triggers the memory that you are allowed to be touched.
Outside, the snow continues its work of erasure. Inside, Shane's breathing begins to even out, every limb recalling how to be a man at rest rather than an animal fawning and freezing. The trembling subsides, wave by wave, as if Ilya's hand is smoothing it out of him.
"Sleep, зайчик," Ilya says softly, his free hand coming to rest in Shane's hair. "I have you."
This is not true, Shane thinks, and it is also the only true thing.

Summary
Rozanov posts on Instagram a lot. Not on his feed, but his stories.
Every time he lands in a city, he posts a story. Usually it's just back of his seat, or sometimes the view out the window—on the tarmac, never anything exciting, one of just many cities their lives are broken up into—and a location tag. Low effort.
It’s pretty obvious what it is. Guys laugh about it, call it Rozanov’s Fuck Signal. The easiest way to get the hot girls who follow him to slide into his DMs.
Easy pussy.

Summary
It’s been almost three years since the last time they played against each other. Not in an exhibition, not a ceremonial puck drop or a smiling photo op. A real game, with real skates and real hard contact. Shane could swear, right now, that if he closes his eyes he’d remember the crack of sticks, the echo of blades against ice, the roar of the crowd rising and falling like a living thing by its own right. He won’t even have to try hard. It’s always there in the back of his mind. The way Ilya skated across the rink, visor fogged slightly, mouthguard half out of his mouth in that familiar, infuriating way.
Three years is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Three years is also an eternity. Long enough for routines to change and for habits to calcify like bone. For absence to become a kind of presence all on its own.
--- In which Shane and Ilya break up in 2017, after Florida. It's 2029, and both have retired and put the game behind them. An invitation to a charity event sets things in motion. Or, another alternate take on what happens after Episode 4.
