Josie was not distant. Nor was she afraid of Hope. Instead, there was a hesitancy, an awkwardness that permeated their every interaction. Almost as if her girlfriend was on pins and needles, waiting for something to happen. And Hope had, in response, been spending more and more time alone. Wolfed out and wandering through the woods at night.
She felt safer in her wolf form. It was easier to think. Easier to sleep.
She got in the habit of heading to the woods after Josie fell asleep, returning just before dawn. In the fading darkness, Josie’s eyes remained closed, her breathing and heart rate sometimes indicated she was not asleep. On those mornings, Hope would watch Josie – hand resting millimeters away from her girlfriend’s. She never slept herself – always waiting until Josie stirred before getting up.
Until the third week.

For a second, the words don’t sink in.
“What?”
“It is obviously not a common payment anymore, although it has been, in ancient times, for magical beings of my kind. Nowadays, with the new range of possibilities available, this has ceased to be a widespread mean of magical debt settlement. But, of course, an exception can be made.”
Sara is still staring at her, mouth agape, unsure about how to respond. She doesn’t fully believe they’re understanding each other, because what Sara is gathering from this conversation is that the witch is demanding a child – an actual human newborn – as payment for a spell.

Summary
Just the idea of Lena kissing her, is a lot and she’s shocked at how much she wants her to do just that. It makes sense, in this moment, casting spells and making unions. It could be another way in which they could truly connect their bodies and oh, Rao, this is new. Is this new? Kara’s not sure she knows anymore.
Maybe it’s the magic, the connection of the spell, binding them as one in some way Kara can’t comprehend, nor understand, or maybe it’s something that’s always been there? A longing, dormant in the back of her mind, waiting for a spark to awaken it. Her heart, her feelings. Lena.
“To us,” Kara says, knocking the entire drink back and trying to pull herself together.

Wondering why Lena's avoiding her, Kara goes in search of answers.

But ever since she and Lizzie had begun to grow closer—had become best friends instead of friends instead of frenemies instead of enemies—she'd been forced to reckon with feelings that she'd only be able to ignore if she lacked her humanity. (Maybe not even then.)
And she'd been working with Miss Tig, and her other therapists after Miss Tig left, about not entirely repressing her feelings and emotions, because it's not healthy to bottle things up and deny yourself the truth and et cetera, et cetera. Whatever, she knows the spiel.
So, she acknowledges it, but only to herself. Just so she won't blow up and overflow from denial.
And if that means her smiles get a bit tender, and her touches last a bit longer, sue her. She's trying her best. To be a good best friend.
