Right now, all he knew was that he was coveting an unnameable thing. Well, not unnameable. He knew it because it had lived alongside him for so long. He knew it because it had carved its shape into his bones at a young age and nestled there. It only woke up when everything started falling apart. The video, Montreal, Roger fucking Crowell. Everything circled back to those events. An endless taunt wrapping around Shane’s body. He had failed Ilya in those moments. Hadn’t thought about what could have happened; instead he lost himself when he should have been present. He had lost control and now there was a scar, burning across his vision like the end of the fucking world. As he cut vegetables for dinner, as he breathed around his clenching stomach he felt a small part of that control seep back into his skin. He could breathe, if only for a moment. And if he could put those moments together, maybe he could feel whole again.
