    First you’ve got Ottawa’s own Shane Hollander - from everything we’ve seen and heard he may not be the most sociable but this is the man with the highest climate science IQ out there. Incredibly smart, incredibly dedicated to climate justice, and incredibly hot.

    Then you’ve got Russia’s Ilya Rozanov strong on social media, strong with the ladies, and from everything we’ve heard he really gets under other storm chaser’s skins - viral on his own channels, not exactly liked by the meteorologist community.

    Summary

    In which Shane's relationship with Rose unfolds the way it does on screen, but Ilya's father dies right before All-Star Weekend 2017. They have yet to reconnect, but Shane wants to find a way for them. He decides to come out to his team, starting with management, that spring. The Montreal Metros make it clear that they will not be the league's trailblazer for queer players and terminate his contract. The Admirals lose in game seven.

    In June, Shane goes to Wimbledon with his parents. Instead of a Swedish princess, he meets the CEO of the Swedish Hockey League and makes the decision to leave North America. As a veteran playing for the Växjö Lakers, Shane becomes a mentor to guys trying to go pro in North America. Guys like his linemate, Derek Briggs.

    Years later, Briggs makes the Ottawa Centaurs out of camp. The Centaurs' plane makes an emergency landing, Ilya still sends Shane those messages, but Shane doesn't answer.

    (Or so Ilya thinks.)

    Author's notes: I’m autistic and see a lot of myself in Shane Hollander. So I thought, in this situation, what if he did exactly what I did the first time I hooked up with someone and didn’t know what the protocol was after it was over, what the next steps were, how to be like everyone else in a moment that felt amazing and confusing at the same time. What if he just asked?

    Canon divergent from the first hookup seen in HR s01ep01. Some things are from the show - aged up Marleau and Hunter, mainly - but the timeline is a mix of both. (Notably, they don't wait *two years*, they stick to the book timeline. IYKYK.) Some tags are for later chapters.     Shane could not force himself to be fully in his body after the tuna melt fiasco in Boston. He had always been able to come back to himself at some point when his brain and body decided to ex-communicate each other. Something about this time with Rozanov, had made it impossible for him to fully reconnect the two.

    When they caught each other's eyes in a Montreal club two months later, Shane's mind was so far away from his body he was sure they weren't even in the same time zones.

    When Ilya hurts too much to be careful with himself, his vulnerability might cost him more than his pride--finding himself disconnected from his own body in an insidious way.
    Shane did his best to focus on watching out for himself when it came to their relationship, Ilya never seemed to need help building up walls for his own protection.
    --But when Ilya is lying unconscious in the vile arms of a man who means to hurt him, will Shane's mind and body be able to work together long enough to finally be what Ilya needs him to be? Or will his body betray him and leave Ilya vulnerable, hurt and alone...again.

    There was something small and confused in the question. But Ilya was still furious and raw.

    “Well I would,” he sneered, “if there was anything about you that was fucking interesting to talk about! It would be nice to not be so fucking bored and miserable!”

    The second the words left his mouth, he watched the pain roll across Shane's features like a thousand fractures shattering through glass.

    Ilya had seen Shane nearly break ribs. He had seen him miss game-winning shots, take hits that left bruises blooming purple and black across his skin. He had never seen this.

    Shane closed his eyes for a long moment. He shook his head slightly, a tiny movement, then nodded once as if agreeing with something only he could hear. His face twisted briefly with a fresh wave of pain before he forced it to still.

    What if Shane and Ilya don't make up so easily after the Boxing Day fight? The Centaur's plane never malfunctions, so Shane never proposes. Instead, Ilya gives him an ultimatum on coming out and going public. It backfires spectacularly.
