Summary
Goffredo has loved Aldo all his life. Aldo never loved him back.
When Goffredo learns his lungs are failing, he asks Aldo for one last kindness:
“Pretend you love me—just for the summer. Let me go believing it was true.”
Aldo agrees, thinking it an act of mercy. But as the summer unfolds—between dinners in Rome, lemon trees on the cliffs of Campania, and quiet nights by the sea—Aldo finds himself caught in the very lie he promised to play.
And when autumn comes, he realizes the cruelest part:
