    During Hajime’s third year in California, Oikawa pays him a surprise visit in the middle of December. He comes unannounced, like a storm of roaring happiness and laughter and smart-ass remarks.

    When he returns to San Juan, behind him he leaves a probably condemned ficus bonsai (no matter what Hajime says), an endless string of amazing moments, and alarmingly low levels of mustard for the rest of the Irvine population.

    That, and one more thing.

    (This might be the end of Hajime’s sanity)

There’s a grin on his face, smug and a little devious, and Hajime wishes a meteor would strike the earth at this very moment. Mortification creeps up on him, a flush traveling up his neck and bleeding into his cheeks just as Tooru says, “So you’re dating me, huh?”

    (or: iwaizumi and oikawa pretend to be a couple during a family trip, because that will definitely go well).

    Oikawa’s face and expression very clearly said oh, fuck, and Iwaizumi for the life of him couldn’t figure out why.

    “You, uh, probably heard it wrong, then,” Oikawa tried, his voice pitching awkwardly.

    Iwaizumi raised his eyebrow. “What, is amor really that bad of an insult?”

    “NO,” Oikawa screeched, before looking away. “I don’t—” he stammered out. “It’s not bad. It’s— ugh.”

    All Iwaizumi could do was blink at his outburst. He honestly had no idea why Oikawa would be so worked up about this—even if it was an insult, they insulted each other all the time. What made this one different?

    Oikawa inhaled, collecting himself. “It means,” he started, not looking Iwaizumi in the eyes. “Best friend. In Spanish. Amor means best friend in Spanish.”
