As Rivendell falls into a deep, unending winter, and the surviving gnomes flee the ruin of their world, a deep evil begins to seed. An impending darkness, a reddened sun.
In every empire, it has begun.
Though, some more so than others.
Or
Scott, expecting a quiet, restful night of sleep, falls out of the sky and into the ocean beside the Codlands, and meets the fourth-most annoying man on the planet(er, planets), who seems to know a lot more about Rivendell than he should.
And Shrub Berry is just a regular displaced gnome living deep in the forest of the Overgrown, whose hobbies include caring for her wolves and not having any more personal experience with the corruption than anyone else, nosiree!
And meets the second-most annoying woman in all the worlds(sorry Jimmy, Katherine's high-teir).

All twelve empires exist in different dimensions, which can be traveled between in dreams, or by seeking out the world borders(very elusive portals, difficult to find if you don't know where to look)
The amount of people who actually know about this, though, entirely depends on which empire you're in.
