He is alive.
...Why is he alive?
Some part of him, something critical, had severed from his being. He could feel it. Rather, he could feel its absence. There was a sense of loss—sharper than any Shinigami Zanpakutō, more piercing than any Quincy Heilig Pfeil—that had slid between his ribs and straight into his heart. It was utterly paralyzing.
Yhwach.
His Majesty was dead, and for reasons Jugram Haschwalth did not yet understand, he was not.
Or: Uryū Ishida is the successor to the Qunicy Throne. An inexperienced leader, he is in need of an advisor. Who better else, than the man who served at the side of the previous king for well over a thousand years?

Erwin knows pain.
Over the course of his life, he has come to know it so well that it’s become like an old friend; sometimes, the only one.
He first crossed paths with it in front of his father’s gravestone, and with a kind and sincere smile, it offered him a hand full of sweets, like the kind adults warn children not to take.
Since then, it’s always stayed with him.
And it hasn’t been all that bad, he’s always told himself. It’s not bad to have someone in your ranks who, at the right moment, grabs you by the hair and spits in your face, bloodied, saying, 'Yes, you’re still alive, you long-tongued bastard,' when a mass of mangled bodies might make you believe (and wish) otherwise.
It wasn’t bad to know it, but it was bad to underestimate its power.
