It takes less than two weeks for Kairi to request Ienzo, Ansem the Wise, and Even search her heart for Sora.
“I’ll be back before you know it.” Kairi sends him a smile that says she’ll do it no matter what anyone tells her. “Don’t miss me too much.” There’s a firm resolve in the way her back straightens up. “We’ll find Sora.”
Riku fights down the sweeping cold that washes all the way to his fingertips, blaming the sun sinking beneath the surf. He squeezes Kairi’s hand and smiles, instead. “I’ll hold you to it.”
It’ll be fine. The words repeat like some sort of mantra. It’ll be fine. He just has to believe it’ll be fine.
Kairi will sleep, Sora will come back, and they’ll all be together again.In which Riku spends another year without his closest friends.

Summary
Apollo likes the familiar. After the roller coaster of the UR-1 retrial following Clay's death, a regular routine is so comfortable that it's practically addictive. It's hard to stave off the lingering sense of stagnation that begins to settle in as the months go on, though, and he supposes it had to be only a matter of time before old wounds opened again.
The attempted murder of a well-known editor has Apollo defending the author who is the only suspect, but the seemingly cut and dry case is not as simple as it seems. Meanwhile, his mind is racing, Trucy is hard at work preparing plans for her father's birthday party, Athena is ever the over-attentive psycho-analyst, and he and Klavier keep managing to wind up in close quarters.
It's hard to work a case with his emotions getting in the way, and even harder when everyone around him seems to be revisiting painful memories at the same time.

"Cloud flipped through the papers, trying to figure out why the note had roused his suspicion. The papers were, as the note implied, blueprints for wind turbines. Nothing seemed strange about it, but he’d learned years ago not to ignore his instincts.
He found his answer at the bottom of the last page, on one of the mentioned transfer forms. It was another signature in that same elegant script, but this time a full name.
