Making an AI of most people was easy. Shin had done it time and time again. Gather every tic, every reaction, opinion, and stray thought, and put it into a database. Translate it into code, and by nightfall, he’d have an exact replica. He could take his own data, make a few edits, and speak to a version of himself he’d never wanted to meet. Corrupted, twisted into something that never should have existed, but also never stepped out of believability.
It was a matter of memory. What a person remembered, and how they felt about those memories, made up the base of every AI they created. The problem came when a person’s memories… did not exist.

Shin is an employee at ASU-NARO using people's memories to recreate them. On the side, he chases after his own impossible recreation project.Unfortunately for him, his job and his passion project get in the way of each other, before merging in a way that leaves him sick and wishing they never did.

“Hanahaki,” Hiyori broke the silence of Shin’s hyperventilating, causing Shin to look up at him. His eyes stung, puffy, full of tears, and squinting at the bright light exacerbating his headache. Hiyori turned it off and replaced it with a softer desk lamp.
“W…hat?” Shin could barely get the word out. His throat burned and he winced. Hiyori sank to the floor next to him, looking at him empathetically.
Hiyori grinned at him. He seemed too happy about this, “The cure’s super simple. You’re not letting yourself love someone enough, so all you need to do is accept their love and it will all go away.” What? What kind of affliction was that? Shin wanted to call the bluff for what it was, but why would Hiyori lie about something like that?
...
Hiyori hadn't been lying. At least, not entirely. Shin wishes he had been.Or: Rejecting otherwise wanted love causes flowers to bloom in Shin's lungs, but it wasn't Hiyori who caused it.
