Moze finally broke the silence, his voice low and hesitant. “It’s just… easier to think of work and innocents rather than… me.”
Jiaoqiu’s expression softened, fingers pausing. He set the clippers down on the nightstand next to the bed, and walked around the bedframe to sit in front of the assassin.
“You’re not alone in this anymore,” he said sincerely, his tone laced with care. “You have me, Feixiao; so many people who care about you. You don’t have to face every threat by yourself either. Let me help you– beyond just treating the wounds.”
The shadow guard looked away, a mix of gratitude and guilt shimmering in his gaze. “I’m not used to… this,” Moze said after a moment of hesitation. “Having someone who cares… I feel as though I don’t deserve it.”
The healer’s hand rested on Moze’s uninjured shoulder, his warm touch a steady anchor. “Then it’s about time you get used to it. I’m here to stay, and I’ll keep reminding you until that fact finally sinks in.”
(Or Moze comes home injured for the nth time that month. Jiaoqiu takes care of him, and realizes that the assassin has some lingering insecurities in the process.)

“What’s for dinner?” Moze asked back instead of answering the question.
Jiaoqiu’s smile persisted with a tiniest tick at the edge as if he already expected that response, though as he turned around, Moze could see his ears perking up and his tail swishing idly behind him.
Setting aside his boots into the shoe rack, right next to Jiaoqiu’s own, Moze followed the Foxian back into the kitchen. If this house would be made an analogy of Jiaoqiu’s body, then surely his heart could be found amidst the lit stoves and piping hot ceramic pots. This was a chamber for a tireless heart—just as fire never stopped cooking, just as herbs and spices never stopped comforting.
Because a functioning household means there’s someone alive to keep it warm.
