    Summary

The Shackling Prison had held war criminals, mara-struck abominations, disciples of the Sanctus Medicus, even enemies of the Alliance whose names had long since been erased from public record.

    But never a High Elder.

For thousands of years, the title had stood above ordinary law. The High Elder was not just an individual, but an institution, a pillar woven into the very foundation of Xianzhou itself.

Now, one sat imprisoned beneath it.

    Summary

Mondstadt City — otherwise known as the City of Freedom. Cobblestone streets wound between windmills and the red-roofed shops of the Market District, while at its heart, the Crown of the North remained as lively as ever. Merchants haggled over the price of goods, and the sweet aroma drifting from the flower shop carried past Knights of Favonius guards standing at their posts (far too lazily for Lohen’s liking).

Life, he thought, carried on the way it always did, even when circumstances changed. Reuniting with his homeland should have put him at ease; the expedition had been a treacherous journey, after all. He almost hadn’t made it back alive.

And yet, home wasn’t the same. No, it would never be.

    Not without Adorno.

    Summary

“I don’t hate kids,” says Lohen.

Varka trips a little. “What was that?”

Lohen responds by sinking further into Varka’s chest, enveloped by his heartbeat and expanding-retracting lungs. “They’re, just… loud. And needy.”

Varka snorts. “I’d have thought that would give you some common ground with ‘em.”

Lohen wants to pinch him, but his arm won’t move.

“And maybe you’ve got that much in common with Mondstadt, too,” says Varka, “because we need you. So you have to survive this, alright?”

Lohen doesn’t actually want to die, he just really, really, really wants his subordinates to live. Sometimes that means standing between them and a heaving, snarling beast and letting it do its thing.
