Mondstadt City — otherwise known as the City of Freedom. Cobblestone streets wound between windmills and the red-roofed shops of the Market District, while at its heart, the Crown of the North remained as lively as ever. Merchants haggled over the price of goods, and the sweet aroma drifting from the flower shop carried past Knights of Favonius guards standing at their posts (far too lazily for Lohen’s liking).
Life, he thought, carried on the way it always did, even when circumstances changed. Reuniting with his homeland should have put him at ease; the expedition had been a treacherous journey, after all. He almost hadn’t made it back alive.
And yet, home wasn’t the same. No, it would never be.

Varka snorts. “I’d have thought that would give you some common ground with ‘em.”
Lohen wants to pinch him, but his arm won’t move.
“And maybe you’ve got that much in common with Mondstadt, too,” says Varka, “because we need you. So you have to survive this, alright?”
Lohen doesn’t actually want to die, he just really, really, really wants his subordinates to live. Sometimes that means standing between them and a heaving, snarling beast and letting it do its thing.

“Here is what is going to happen,” he said, keeping his voice calm and level. “I am going to set you down, and you are not going to stab me.”
The boy stared at him.
Varka waited.
The boy continued staring, darker and harder this time, as though silence itself had been sharpened into a weapon.
Varka exhaled through his nose. “That was the part where you agreed.”
No agreement came.
Of course it didn’t.
Varka glanced briefly toward the starsilver shard, then back to the boy’s face. “Fine. Since we are negotiating in silence, I will take anything that is not immediate violence as a tentative yes.”
The boy’s eyes narrowed by a fraction.
“Good enough.”

NB: Only Lohen is younger than in canon here. This is purely for plot reasons. By plot, I mean I like the thought of all the knights trying to rein in one feral gremlin.

Dan Feng had performed the Vidyadhara high elder succession ritual on Yingxing. Even though Yingxing adamantly disagreed with Dan Feng when he entertained the idea once before.Before Dan Feng could even see if the ritual worked, the unintended consequences of the ritual led him to very quickly be detained until his trial, and later, his impending execution.

When Yingxing’s respiratory illness worsens, he takes his physician’s suggestion to move away from the air pollution of the cities. Finding an appropriate location on a remote mountain, Yingxing makes his new home there. One day, he meets a dragon.
Yingxing has been in his new home for a month when the incidents begin. […] He adds more security measures, locking the windows and double barring the doors, putting up wards, but it keeps happening. He’s beginning to genuinely freak out—how the hell is whoever or whatever it is still getting in? —and then one evening, he returns from the forge to find the edge of a small paw print on the disturbed blueprints on his home desk.
The little guy seems to have inadvertently stepped in Yingxing’s unwashed inkstone, tracking a small smudge of ink onto the papers like a guilty delinquent leaving behind their dirty fingerprints.
