He wanted her to take his hand and say, sorry Edward, you’re right, we won’t go through with this. He wanted for her to have not done the terrible things that she had, he didn’t want her to go to prison, or to stand blindfolded in front of a firing squad. He didn’t want things to be the way that they were.

Lain Iwakura sat quietly in the waiting room of the small little therapy practice, watching the clock tick by with the sort of idle curiosity that a cat had for the birds it was preparing to kill. In her head, she imagined pulling it off the wall, tearing it into tiny pieces with her hands and a screwdriver, and then leaving the scattered corpse of it as detritus for her new therapist to find, much like how her cat would leave the corpses of birds by her windowsill, trying to feed her animal parts. Lain didn't have the cat anymore. She didn't have much, a computer, a bedroll, a screwdriver, somehow by the grace of God a degree at a decently respectable university... and that was about the extent of it. Her family "existed" around her, but she couldn't really consider herself connected to them in any real fashion.
Today was her first day at therapy. She was scared.
