Apparently, it wasn’t as easy as just putting a bowl on your head and saying some fancy words, to completely transform yourself into something else. Ed couldn’t just run away and expect to become something he wasn’t overnight.
He had wanted to start over, wipe the slate completely clean with a nice honest family. He had tried to fit in by forcing his shape into something that it wasn’t, until it cracked and popped back to its original form. It didn’t matter how much he rubbed at that slate– it was always gonna have smudges. It would never be a hundred precent clean.
OR
A rewrite of the season two finale, with enough room to allow all those stories and characters to properly breathe. No major canon divergence (except one thing) - just developing what's already there.

"What're you going to do when you get back?" Kakyoin asked idly, combing his fingers through his hair to try and pull some order into the red knots. He turned on his side to face Jotaro.
They never really talked about "after". It seemed dangerous. All of them moved forward with the determination that they were going to put a stop to Dio, but none of them were blind to the reality that not everyone might make it back home.
They also never talked about an “after” in regards to them.

Summary
Kabuto doesn't understand the intimate relationship between Orochimaru and Kimimaro, or why he cannot ever be a part of it. He spends years devoted to his Master, yearning for his acceptance and love, but always finds Kimimaro standing in his way. He can't allow himself to be "second best" forever, and plots a means of getting rid of Kimimaro for good.
Meanwhile, Orochimaru is disinterested in the tension forged between them. He only has eyes for Kimimaro, for as long as he remains useful, and intends to treasure him completely. Orochimaru knows he will have to be soulless and let Kimimaro go when the sickness finally comes to take him away, but until then... he will not allow anyone to disturb their relationship.
.( Kimimaro & Kabuto are technically teenagers at this point in the Canon. I didn't age them up, even if it's not heavily implied.)
