A resident shouldn’t look at her attending that way. An attending sure as hell shouldn’t touch her like that. But she wasn’t just some resident and rules didn’t feel solid anymore. Not with the way her eyes tracked his every move like she was waiting for a verdict. Not with how her breath had shortened, fractionally, even as her face stayed still.
He reached for her. Not abruptly. Not carelessly.
Just one hand—broad, steady—sliding around her wrist like a blood pressure cuff. His thumb pressed lightly to her pulse point, and there it was. Fast. Strong. Unhidden.
She didn’t pull away.
His voice, when it came, was quiet enough to disappear under the hum of the fridge behind them.
“Tell me to stop,” he said. “And I will.”
Heather didn’t answer. Definitely not aloud because she didn’t need to. Because her fingers curled slowly around the edge of his palm and held on.
