When she saw Aubrey sobbing at the gravestone, she made sure to not repeat her mistakes. She was there for Aubrey, who apparently felt guilty over a falling out she had with Basil years prior. She listened, and she observed. She observed bruises. She knew in her bones that she had to take in Aubrey at that moment. Nothing will ever make up for her failure with Basil, but maybe, by helping his friend, he would forgive her one day.

Basil is dead, and Aubrey blames herself. Basil was practically estranged to her for the last few years, and she wishes she got to know him rather than hurt him. She finds Basil's dairy and will work through it to get to know him better, even though he is dead.
She felt abandoned by her old friends, and by her parents. She also felt alone despite the hooligans being her friends, as if no one really understood her. She will learn this was wrong, there was one person who also felt very much like this.... but its too late for her to do anything with it.
