Betty Cooper doesn’t like her new client. Samm (double “M”) Pansky is the textbook definition of shady. What kind of asshole goes by “Samm”? Never trust a man with pretentiously spelled otherwise pedestrian name. But Betty is also a relatively green New York City PI and she cannot turn down a job. Especially a seemingly easy job of investigating a young writer named Jughead Jones (what kind of asshole goes by “Jughead”?). Investigating for what? “Anything suspicious” is Mr. Pansky’s unhelpful reply.
Or: Investigating a crime is one thing. Inadvertently causing one? Something else entirely. Now they have to solve it. Together. In other words, "they started investigating each other" ...

Betty almost misses the flyer.
But five feet from the end of the block, something snags in her mind, pulling her body to a stop. Without knowing why, she retraces her steps back along the sidewalk until she’s standing before it: the telephone pole she’s passed at least a hundred times on her way from the subway to Jughead’s building. She’s never looked at it twice before.

Her breath catches in her throat. She knows the smiling face staring back at her in faded print -- the lightly freckled cheeks, the curly auburn hair pulled back with a girlish red bow. She used to see that face every day in homeroom at Riverdale High.
