Carmy rubs his forehead to keep his fingers from shaking and chews harshly on the wad of nicotine gum. The empty wrappers rest on top of the papers, and his messy writing in the wider margins makes her absence even more heavy in his stomach. He exhales sharply, pulling on the ends of his curls, trying not to let the familiar pain constrict his chest; that growing sensation he knows all too well from a childhood waiting anxiously, counting the seconds until the other shoe dropped.
Then his phone rings.

She wasn’t sure about this. She’d never worked with someone that she was in a relationship with at her restaurant and she didn’t want it to be a disaster. For her or their relationship. She never expected Carmy. At all. Somehow she had fallen completely head over heels for him and she was trying to keep it to herself. But somehow, his spirit, his softness, his intelligence, the way he held her face so he could look in her eyes every time he brought her to climax had her doing things she never thought she would before.

It doesn’t not bother her, being apart from him. She’d forgotten how monotonous it all was- the going to work and coming home, wash, rinse, repeat. Doing it alone, spending the night replaying the day, mustering together a meal just because you have to.It bothers her a lot, being apart from him.
Two days of being distant and overly-professional, of Carmy never looking her in the eye. He put the ball in her court, and now she feels as if it’s being repeatedly bashed against her forehead.
It’s day three of their fight, and Sydney is starting to get worried.
