Summary
Sydney had thought that once she finally gave Shapiro her answer, things would finally fall into place. The restaurant was finally making a (small) profit, her dish got rave reviews, the team was settling into their own respective roles, nobody had quit in over two months, and Marcus' nomination was only the cherry on top.
For the first time, she'd let herself believe that everything was going to be okay. She could finally see the light at the end of this long and strenuous tunnel.
And then Pete called.
And the news hit her hard. Like that light at the end of the tunnel was actually just a train coming straight to hit her.
Now the whole thing feels like a nightmare she can't wake up from.
She stares down at her prep notes, trying to concentrate, but it's like her brain can't focus on anything. All she can think about is this place without Carmy in it and how wrong it'll feel without him.

Carmy was excited; everything was working out, and as soon as Syd was up, he knew she was going to be crazy about the tree he had put together for her. He made sure to decorate it with over 30 Polaroids of all their years together. Starting with the ones taken when they were just working together at The Beef, and he was fooling himself into thinking he was just her boss, and she was never looking his way and that it was just fine, just like it was supposed to be.
He had also printed some of the pictures she had sent him while in Copenhagen, and he added a bunch of pictures of Sophie and the cats, too. That tree was a vertical photo album of their story together and the amazing family they had raised throughout the years. Some pictures of the *family-family* also made the cut. Snapshots of Marcus, Richie, Tina, Sweeps, and, of course, Luca, Ebra, and the whole staff of the window on the side for sandwiches. Even Albert Schnur, who had recently passed away, was present in that tree, as a tribute.
Carmy couldn’t wait for her to see it. He hadn’t even felt this excited about Christmas when he was a child.

“Maybe we should tell somebody?” she asked as Carmy pulled out his wallet and checked his own driver’s license, confirming their shared address.
He shook his head. “I don’t think they’d believe us, Syd. Richie didn’t. I mean, would you believe us?” He held up his wallet. Inside the photo sleeve was a small picture of the two of them holding what appeared to be a newborn Gemma.
Sydney sighed, “No.”
She tried to imagine how it would go but in every scenario telling someone that everything about their lives was fake and wrong ended with one or both of them in psychiatric treatment and Gemma, their daughter in the care of others and not her unfit, delusional parents. Sydney shifted the car into reverse and glanced at the child sleeping in her car seat. “We’ll have to figure it out ourselves.” -

Summary
The apprenticeship was emailed to her by one of her favorite professors right as decided it was time to wrap things up on Sheridan Road. She submitted the notice of dissolution for her LLC and her landlord had told her she had a month to find somewhere else to live when the email with the information about Chef Berzatto’s apprenticeship was sent to her. Working with Berzatto was one of her only options and a long shot, but her current state of affairs left her at a loss for what to do next. This apprenticeship sounded like her saving grace and last hope before she gave up on the culinary industry as a whole. A place that she never felt truly welcomed in or like she belonged.
