Summary
The detective did have to admit there was some sort of… vulnerability, some child-like naivety and wide-eyed excitement that surrounded their tech analyst, something that drew out the elders’ protective instincts, but that didn’t mean that Jesse couldn’t help himself. He was strong, Charlie would be the first to admit, and tough, and had suffered more than he had needed to, considering his chosen profession. He was an adult, his own person, so Charlie was genuinely curious as to why their Superintendent was making packed lunches for someone other than his daughter.

It wasn’t that Jesse didn’t want to sleep, despite what his late nights and early mornings in the SJPD bullpen might have told anyone, it was just that… he couldn’t. The following days and weeks from his stint in the hospital, with his ribs still bruised and aching because Sarah was A LOT stronger than she appeared, the late nights behind the bright LED screens of his station at the St John’s Police Department almost tripled in frequency.
His apartment was small, his bedroom even more so, and every time Jesse pulled himself under the blue covers of his bed and turned his lamp out was when the claustrophobic panic would set in, followed closely by what he could only describe as a sleep paralysis demon. It had been weeks since Kevin Conway had been arrested for murder and attempted murder, but Jesse felt frozen in time.
