“I don’t know how to keep sending them up knowing not all of them are coming back. I can’t…I can’t keep looking those boys in the eye and telling them they’re doing a good job when I’ve got to write their letters home next week.”

He came prepared, desperate for be free from the horror and pain that plagued him since he was discharged, and he'll see the city but he can't see John. He can't.
But maybe, one last phone call wouldn't hurt.

“I know you said you live out here,” John says, leaning out the window of his truck. “But do you ever get into town?”
“Not really,” Gale shrugs. He sees something that might be disappointment flit across John’s handsome face before that bright grin is back in place, crinkling his eyes and his forehead and making it hard to fight down his own. “Some supply runs here and there.”
Johns nods, still smiling. “Well, maybe I’ll see you around sometime?”
“Don’t count on it,” Gale tells him, letting his lips curve up slightly. John laughs and waves and Gale’s hands twitch as he watches a breeze blow a curl out of place and over his forehead before he’s rolling the window up and pulling away. Gale watches his tree laden truck pull out the gate and onto the street and feels a strange sense of sadness settle over him once he’s out of sight.

“You shoulda seen me two days ago,” Gale says, shuffling over and leaving a space for John to sit beside him on the bed. John lowers himself down and doesn’t bother leaving much distance between them.
“I would’ve if you’d to told me you didn’t have anywhere to go for Thanksgiving,” John can’t help but say, not willing to stop pushing the subject.
Gale turns his head to look at him, head tilted, confusion in his eyes that makes John roll his own.“I’d have stayed,” John says and then shakes his head, “Or I’d have brought you home with me. My ma would’ve had the time of her life fussing over your skinny self.”

They stood a few feet apart, just looking at each other for a moment. Gale started to fiddle with the end of his tie with both hands, fingers smoothing over the fabric, but he was looking at Bucky and he was smiling.
“C’mere,” Bucky opened his arms and Gale didn’t hesitate to walk into the circle of them. He felt Gale’s arms wrap around his waist and his face turn into his neck as he brought his own around the smaller man. Letting his face tuck into the blonde hair, he just held him for a minute, eyes closed and breathing. Gale was holding himself a little tense and Bucky hoped it was from the soreness he’d described the day before and not something else. He let his hands rub along Gale’s back, gentle, soothing and he felt Gale relax further into his hold.
He felt lips brush his throat once, twice and then he shivered when Gale tongued over his pulse point, before pressing a kiss there too.

Summary
“Good morning sunshine,” Bucky greets with a smile.
“Morning John,” Gale returns. That low rumbling voice always gives Bucky a good start to his day, but today it seems rougher.
One of his favorite pastimes nowadays is looking at Gale, so he takes the opportunity to do so now. He takes in his hunched posture, the slight furrow between his brows and notices a slight flush to his cheeks. One of his other favorite pastimes is making the other blush, but nothing in this morning’s interaction warrants that reaction. Concern rushes through Bucky immediately and he leans into Gale’s space.
“Buck,” he keeps his voice low, knowing that Gale hates unwarranted attention. “Are you feeling alright?”
