Ilya snorted out a laugh without meaning to. He didn't have the best father to look up to growing up, so he had no real idea what a good father figure looked like. Even though he had his doubts and worries that he was messing up, or ruining their childhoods, he was fairly certain he was doing a better job compared to how his own father was.

“Papa, what's that?” Ava asked, looking up at him.
Ilya stopped, looking at her with a confused furrowed brow. “What's what?”
“That.” Ava pointed to his necklace. The same necklace she had seen since birth. She had never seen him without it on. It slowly dawned on Ilya that while she always saw it, she had no idea what he was actually wearing. She probably was wondering why his necklace looked so different from Shanes. Or why they even had necklaces to begin with.
He thought for a moment, trying to figure out how to answer. “This was my mother's.” He said carefully.

“Okay who is this?” Ilya said as another song played. Shane let out a deep sigh and looked in the rear view mirror. Everyone back there had fallen asleep, which meant that Ilya could play this game without any interruptions.
“Ilya.” Shane said firmly.
“Shane.” Ilya said back in a playful mocking tone. Shane could sense the grin on Ilya's face. “Who sings this?”
“Ilya we're not playing this game.”
“Moya lyubov, please.” Ilya begged. He took Shane's free hand into his own and kissed his knuckles. “Just a few rounds.”
Shane tapped his thumb against the wheel and let out a defeated sigh. “Fine. Whatever. Just a few rounds.”

“You’re going to meet your big sister now.” He said quietly to the baby girl in his arms. She had opened her eyes while Ilya was downstairs, and now was looking up at Shane with blue, unfocused eyes. The fact she had Ilya's eyes made his heart melt. “She's very loud but she's very sweet. Like your papa.” The baby let out a tiny grunt. “Yeah, like papa. And your big brother, Dimitri, is more like me I guess. He's going to be a good big brother to you. And Ava's going to be a good big sister.” He gave her a gentle kiss on the forehead, which made her grunt again.

"Ouchie?"
"Just a little, itty bitty one." Or maybe his brain was hemorrhaging, but Ilya tried hard to shove that thought down.
Mila frowned. "I wanna give Daddy a bandaid."
"This is a special bandaid only Papa can give," Ilya said, thinking rapidly and coming up with very little. "You can give him a special Mila-only bandaid when we see him later. Okay?"
Mila nodded slowly. She swallowed her fruit snacks and looked at Ilya in the mirror. "You have to ‘member to kiss his ouchie, Papa."
Ilya reached his hand back between the seats and held it there until her small fingers wrapped around his.
"I will kiss Daddy's ouchie."

Shane gets injured during practice. It is, to put mildly, a lot for his very attached husband and children to handle.

[Inside the Ottawa Centaurs’ locker room, Harris Drover attaches a microphone to Shane Hollander’s shirt as Ilya Rozanov sits next to him at a table. The two prepare to share the contents of their backpacks, which sit on the table in front of them]
Shane: I thought when people did these interviews, they got to like, pick what’s in their bag beforehand. It’s not usually a spontaneous thing, is it?
Ilya: How would you know this?
Shane: I watched one that Rose did.
Ilya: Oh, of course you watched Rose doing one of these videos. Did she have a framed photo of you in her bag so she could gush about how much you love each other?
Shane: Do I seriously need to remind you that I chose to marry you, and that we live and work together, and Rose is just my friend I see like twice a year?
Ilya: Yes.
Shane: Are you sure you want to do this with us, Harris?
Harris: I can’t help that the people love you. Besides, I’ve convinced myself this will be fun.
Shane: That’s not very comforting.
Harris: Neither is the look on Ilya’s face that’s telling me I will definitely come to regret this, but that’s the job!

"Please don't strip in front of this bar."
"'s too hot," he muttered. "Stupid humid Florida. Was nice in the morning. Now I miss my dreary Canada."
"Well, don't worry. It's waiting for you. All ten degrees of it."
"With you there, you make it 10 degrees hotter." He tried for a wink. It didn't fully land.
Shane really wanted to kiss him. "Okay, Romeo."
Ilya is out of town celebrating Svetlana's birthday, leaving Shane to parent the kids by himself for the weekend.

Shane came through the door with four cases of Pedialyte stacked in his arms. Ilya had asked him to pick up one on the way home. One.
"Last time Niko had the flu, he liked the grape one best," Shane said, studying the cases with his brow furrowed. "But that was over a year ago. And his favorite Gatorade flavor right now is lemon-lime, so I figured it'd be safer just to get a variety pack—"
Ilya stood beside him and watched him unload the cases. There were times—many times—when Ilya's feeling of endearment toward Shane was so overwhelming, so consuming, that the only way he could describe it was that he wanted to crawl inside his skin and live there.
He settled for stepping in close and pressing a kiss to Shane's temple instead.
Or,
The flu sweeps through the Hollander–Rozanov household. Just as Shane thinks he's the last man standing, he goes down hard.
