She smiled with crescent-moon eyes. "I could never be, my queen."
"Speak plainly," Alicent said. Whispered, "Please."
When had she last said that word? Ryaenyra thought back – when she'd still been called a friend, surely, and staus had been a concept not fully grasped. Ryaenya hadn't realized her power until she was the one who had to say the pleading words instead.
"I don't appreciate being spoken for, you know this," she said, aiming for a lightness untouched for years. It was like reaching into a dark cavern within her heart.
