Summary
“You’re not a very hard guy to catch, you know.”
Golden armor. Crimson accents.
“Avery.”
And it’s different this time. It isn’t it’s you. It isn’t I found you. No, it’s—
“You’re alive,” Avery says, a little breathless.
Or, Avery finds himself reliving New Year’s Eve over and over, but he’ll try as many times as he has to if it means he can save Derek.

Summary
This was the true curse of knowing things that shouldn't be known. Out of the millions and millions of people throughout all of time and space, he fell in love with one close enough to see, to hear, but just out of reach. The true curse was knowing every possible way that their lives could have played out, but living in the one where they never got to touch.

Summary
Avery's mum comes to visit on a Saturday in November. She is warm and a little overwhelming and she brings food and she looks at Derek for approximately four minutes before pulling Avery aside to ask if that boy eats enough.
He eats fine, Avery says.
She says: he looks like someone who forgets.
She is right. She is often right. Avery comes from people who are often right in this specific way, who see things without being told to look. It is, he has always known, one of the best and most dangerous things about his family.
Derek has his mum. Just his mum. Who raised him alone and knows him better than anyone and has been calling every three days since the hospital.
For one afternoon in November, Avery's family becomes something Derek moves through carefully, like a person navigating a new world and trying to understand the rules. The rules are: come in, sit down, eat something. There are no other rules. Derek doesn't quite believe this yet.

Summary
The air was warming with the first touches of spring, but it was still sharp when it filled his lungs. It wasn’t the heavy overworked air of the Under-City.
It was fresh. It was brilliant and bright and it was…
He checked his watch.
3:47 in the morning.
Well.
It was probably smartest to emerge at such a point...Doc had insisted, even if he, Grian, Pearl...everyone had been clamoring to go, to finally go.
And go they did. And here he was.
{In which, after three months in the dark, Jimmy sees the sky, and Scott sees a sunrise. His sunrise.}
