It had to be an illusion, he thought, when he heard it for the first time. His agonized mind trying to find something to hold on to. Jayce. He called him, again and again, screaming out words Viktor couldn’t process fast enough. Then came the touch - familiar warmth, painful pressure on his ribs. Viktor felt tears welling in his eyes – burning – ashamed that this mirage of Jayce was present for this. He should not be here. He can’t witness this. He can’t- And his voice slowly morphed to “let go” and “please” and “Viktor-Viktor-Viktor”-

Once a year, the Herald takes a virgin, offered up by the community and selected by His angels, to use for His pleasure. If the sacrifice survives, some, maybe all, in their niche of the commune will be blessed with the Herald’s touch a second and final time when they join the ranks of His gloriously evolved.
It is a position of great esteem and great peril to be the Herald’s sacrifice. Many do not survive it. The fear, however, is not of death but of the failure that comes with it. There’s a great deal of mystery around it, but everyone knows a healthy, whole sacrifice is better.
So when the angels arrive at Jayce’s door the day before the ceremony, anyone who knows him is not surprised.
