His shizun Mo Ran, for example, who found him half-frozen in the snow when he fled from the people he thought wanted to save others but were lying all along. Mo Ran, his mom, and the rest of Sisheng Peak give Chu Wanning a fire and a light and a home, and he thinks he might be able to save himself after all.

    And for these people, he’d do anything. Even if it means abandoning that very hope for salvation.

    (Even if it means forgetting the sword riding lessons and the clam chowder and even why he can’t bear to take off that red pendant clasped so tightly around his neck.)
