Rebecca was broken. There was no doubt about that. And now she was feeling her pieces falling away. What was she doing, listening to the insane mumblings of her mother's "psychic?" After Sam's matchbook, she found herself looking for signs like a child. Green is a perfectly normal color, and every decent restaurant has matchbooks. It's not at all improbable that she should come across one shortly after meeting Tish and then attach meaning to it. It was so silly to believe this could happen. That she could become a mother.

Summary
Rebecca’s period was late. She hadn’t seen it since the beginning of August. Right before the football season had begun. She had always been pretty regular, but she had expected that with age things may become a little more unreliable. When it was only a few days late she could ignore it.
A few days became two weeks. Two weeks became three. Still, she compartmentalized it and put thinking about it away to one side. She wasn’t ready to deal with the implications of her period becoming less regular.
