Her head falls to his shoulder. “Soon to be Mrs. Jones.”
The wedding date is set, only weeks away. She’s not big on flashy things, she hasn’t been since she left her mother’s house the night of their high school graduation to move in with him, and together they’ve planned a small, elaborate ceremony near Sweet Water River with his father and their closest friends in attendance. Betty isn’t even wearing white.
“You know,” Sweet Pea drawls, as Fangs returns to the table with two baskets of fries and two cups of coffee to sober them up. “You need one last hurrah, dear girl, one fial adventure before you become a kept woman.”
“Sweet Pea...” Jughead warns.

They say everyone meets their soulmate on Christmas Eve. Jughead isn’t sure who ‘they’ are, but he thinks they must be wrong, for a number of reasons. First of all, not everyone celebrates Christmas, so the date would be completely meaningless outside of the western world. Second of all, the only person who wasn’t old or a relative that Jughead has ever met on Christmas Eve is Betty Cooper, and while she may be his best friend, there’s no way she’s his soulmate.

"Goodnight, ponytail girl.” With little fanfare, he puts the cigarette out under the sole of his heavy black boot. “Need any help getting home?”
The cold’s sobered her up a bit now, and the smell of his cig is starting to get to her. Her apartment’s only a few blocks down anyway, the street well-lit. “‘Course not,” she replies with a smile.
He nods, leans back against the brick of the apartment building. “See you around then.”
“See you,” she whispers back. It’s most likely they won’t actually ever see each other again, as is the case with so many of these party-adjacent encounters, but it feels nice to leave the possibility open, so she does.
Betty starts her walk home. When she glances back after her first few steps, he’s already gone.

Betty Cooper just can't seem to fit in at Southside High. It's run down, everyone seems to hate her just on principle, and the people who are running the Red and Black don't want her help at all. To make matters worse her recently divorced mother is trying to find her 'soulmate' by going to conventions and touching as many hands as possible.
Betty doesn't even believe in soulmates anyway. Just because some people's nervous systems happen to sync up when they touch for the first time doesn't mean they're soulmates destined to fall in love. Right?
