Summary
None of it mattered. All that mattered was the rut, now worse than it had ever been. Genichiro’s brain pounded against his skull, his nose pressing greedily into the sheets. Wolf’s scent was still there, but only just.
--
Or, Genichiro's rut hits at an inopportune moment, and he becomes fixated on a certain shinobi to help him see it through.

Summary
Then, he sees what Owl has brought.
It’s a boy, Masanaga thinks— they’re gaunt and unkempt, the kind of clean that speaks of one good bath they were given under duress before being dragged here. They’re cowering, but into themselves and not Owl, which says something about their intelligence at least. They’re small; Masanaga doesn’t know how old they are, and he doubts they know, either, but after so long at Hyakka it has become second nature to look at a child and know what kind of shinobi they will make.
This one will be monstrous, if only his father lets Masanaga have them.

Summary
It was blasphemy to live so close to the divine and be ignorant of its splendor, sitting at the foot of the heavens and playing at war with the chosen people. It isn’t just taking a scrap of rugged land. The old gods of Ashina and the new have one thing in common— they must be worshipped where they have been nurtured. Where they live in the earth and the water and the air and the sky.
They cannot take Ashina without killing gods, and the Ashina cannot let it pass. It is not a gentle place. It’s beauty comes with unfathomable cruelty.
It is still his home.
Isshin thinks of himself when he was young, and it reminds him of Kenjiro. He tore through the land and he tore through people and he tore through relationships with retainers and friends and family.
Isshin was going to tear the world apart if he could not have what he wanted. What he felt that he was owed. The world didn’t owe him anything but he was young and strong and stupid and none of that mattered. Isshin would see Ashina soil under his feet before he died.
Isshin would end his life peacefully in the lands of his forefathers, or he would kill himself trying.

Summary
The last time Wolf had been hunted was training with his father and the Usui clan; he remembers running through the forest with his heart in his throat time and again, trying to get away from Owl and Butterfly and all of his brothers.
Wolf has always been faster, and smaller, and better, and eventually no one could find a trace of him in the trees. He was like a ghost, drifting through them all unseen until even Butterly was impressed. It took hard years to get there, and countless nights where he was sure he would die.
The older shinobi trainees would throw Wolf out of his bedroll in the night, laughter echoing between them as they unsheathed knives, run fast little puppy.
If he did not, they would ruin him. Wolf has been shot with poison darts, cut with poison blades.Wolf has been held down by the throat, opening his mouth obediently so they could pour it down his throat. It is what he had earned that time, and he would take his due; next time, he’d be faster. Next time, he’d be quieter.
Next time if he was too slow, they might gut him and leave him in the trees for the crows, they said.
This is different.

Summary
Wolf blinks up at the sky through eyes that want to stay closed. The sunlight is filtered through the trees, faint as it always is in Ashina, but even that hurts to look at. In Ashina, Wolf thinks.
He is back in the depths of Ashina, washed there from the flooded palace, just more runoff from the gods. Another dead thing that cannot be allowed in the heavens.
Wolf is not surprised to be one of them. He closes his eyes and thanks the waters; it is not the first time he has prayed, but it is the first time he has meant it.
His thoughts are thick like melted sugars, stuck together too long in his pouch and misshapen against one another. Breathing hurts. Existing hurts. Wolf is so thirsty but no matter how much he drinks, it is not quenched.
Wolf is hungry, but the thought of hunting game to roast over a fire makes his stomach churn with disgust. He thinks of the enemies in the divine realm, and their blood heavy over his tongue.
Wolf needs to find someone. Anyone.
Wolf needs to go home.

Summary
When Genichiro saw Wolf bleeding in the silvergrass field and refusing to die, he could not look away. It was like looking in a mirror.
Like looking at his brother.
Wolf holding on, refusing to let go. They needed the dragon’s heritage, it was true, but that wasn’t what caught Genichiro like a spider in a web. It was Wolf, even then.
He was so much like Kenjiro.
