Summary
Derek wasn’t born a wolf. Surrounded by a supernatural family, it’s pretty hard to forget that he’s not special, not powerful like Laura, or wild like Cora. His mom can barely look him in the eyes. But when a series of mountain lion attacks shakes the town, strange things start happening to Derek. Things he can’t explain.
So if he must befriend Stiles (the guy who had a crush on Derek since forever) to figure it out, maybe it's all worth it. To hell with his reputation! Derek can't go on not sleeping, hearing strange noises, and what's this pattern he keeps drawing every day? With only an annoying sister, a nosy kid detective, and his three preppy friends to keep him sane, what could possibly go wrong?
So, yeah, maybe Derek isn’t a wolf, but… he’s something.
Or, Derek is a banshee (but doesn't know it) and Stiles is obsessed with his nerdy personality and rude behavior.

As it turns out, Derek is a total doom-magnet, attracting danger wherever he stalks, broods, or breathes, and Stiles has just about had enough of it.
“You have got to be kidding me.”
Derek looks up at him, half conscious, and Stiles feels like leaving him to it and just going home. But he doesn't, because of course, he has to save him.

“Oh, no,” he answered, “Not yet.”

In which a well-timed conflict between the magic of the Ghost Riders and Stiles' spark sends him back to the day Scott got bitten. Stiles pointedly changes nothing and thus begins the most batshit insane story of self-discovery possible. Some unkempt promises and unearthed secrets wouldn't hurt, either. And don't forget the unbridled silliness. Obvi.

Stiles winced, rubbing the back of his neck, and looked over at Derek again. “So... you know how you told me not to touch anything?”
Derek stared at him for a second, not seeming to understand, and then Stiles knew the moment it clicked because his entire face set so concretely it might as well have been carved out of stone.
“What?” Scott asked, looking between them, confused. “What’s going on? I don’t understand. What happened?”
“Yeah,” Stiles said slowly. “So the thing is, I uh, touched something. In the Witch’s house. And Derek came in and grabbed it from me. So he also touched it. And now it uh, it seems like whenever the two of us are a certain distance apart, we start getting sick. Or like, double over in pain. Or, you know, start dying.”
