“Since the Tower of Tomes. The first time around. You did make it there that night, you just don’t remember. I suppose you can gather why, at this point.”
“But — but that’s years, that’s almost a decade! It’s been years, and this is still the best plan I’ve come up with? Seriously?”
“Well,” Qifrey says bleakly, “you tend to only have minutes to work with each time you actually know the nature of the problem, so… give yourself a break in that regard, at least.”
One of the many rounds of the merry-go-round perpetual motion machine of misery that doubles as Qifrey’s life support; an ingenious early design by Olruggio of the Torch, aged about 12. This is set pre-apprentices, but after they’ve built and lived in the atelier for a while.

“I’m a witch! You said it yourself that I- that I can help people.” Coco gasps, desperately clinging to her master’s hands. “I can save you too.”
“I have no doubt that you’ll become a wonderful witch. You already are,” Master Qifrey says, his tone of voice the same as when they’ve done something dangerous. When he has to explain the consequences could’ve been another tragedy. “But dear child, I do not want you to save me.”

Qifrey listened to the chatter, the comments, the passing remarks. He felt the ground steady beneath his shoes as he walked from heel to toe, never quite daring to lift his sole up from the glowing stones. Though it stretched the journey out for longer, none saw fit to hurry him. If anything, both Coco and Agott seemed eager to take their sweet time running off to whatever sights caught their interest before drifting back.
Were Qifrey to turn his gaze upward, all he would find were dazzling lights spattering the city's narrowed skyline, akin to a pond reflecting a swarm of pyreflies as he sat at the bow of a rickety, old boat. Such brilliance wasn't reserved for the grandeur of Silver Eve, rather the sway of the moon, no matter the occasion. It was nothing new, yet...
Charming as the lights were, they now served to only worsen the ache in his temples. How his eye stung so fiercely were he to stare too long at any particular light too bright, piercing through his skull as the Silverwood does—
Adjusting to life outside of a cursed fate is difficult, but familiar company and familial connections make it a fair bit easier.
