“You said Rozanov is a great captain,” one of the reporters says, deviating from the usual script. “What makes him one? Do you think he’s better than you?”

If Ilya was here, Shane would immediately answer with a negative. He would also let Ilya be the one to brag about his many, many accomplishments, and maybe banter with him about who’s got more.

    But Ilya’s not here.

    And Shane is bored.

    Or.
Shane spends a post game interview explaining that his husband is the best captain in the league and accidentally starts a hashtag.

    Summary

Shane Hollander is a man who thrives on structure, routine, the solid ground of a ten-year plan. Ilya likes that about him, likes the embracing squeeze of having a life organized in tandem with Shane.

No one would call Ilya a man who thrives on structure. But it’s there, if not in his DNA then in the patterns of his brain. A call-and-response of: they do this, I do that.

When Ilya’s life is flayed open for the world to dissect, how will they push-and-pull their way back towards what was once a well-organized life?

“I thought we could go through the schedules and figure out what days we’ll be in the same cities this season, or when either of us have a couple of days off in a row. Maybe make a shared calendar, so we c—”

“A sex calendar? Your parents are arriving in thirty minutes, and you are proposing making a sex calendar?” Oh, this was delicious. He’d be able to eat out on this for years, if Shane was willing to give him that long.

“It’s not a sex calendar! It’s just … when we might be able to see each other,” he finished, already sounding defeated.

“And what are you planning on doing when we are seeing each other? Not fucking?”

    Summary

Yuna can hear the silence in the other room, and she tries to take some of it into her self. Her thoughts are moving too fast and her emotions aren’t any better. She needs to pull herself together. As the water boils, she tries desperately to remember anything from that book David had her read. Every useful thought seems to have fled her mind at the sight of Ilya Rozanov in her house, with her son. She takes a deep breath. She may not know how to be the perfect mother to a queer child, but she knows how to be Shane’s mom. She’s been doing it for nearly thirty years now, and she’ll be doing it for the rest of her life. Ilya Rozanov can’t change that.

Or, Yuna's POV of The Cottage, and afterward.

    Summary

No one is going to win a Pulitzer interviewing him, and Shane is okay with that. He spends most interviews rephrasing the same five sentiments--I’m happy we won or We need to work harder after that loss.

They are a good team; the win was hard fought or They are a good team; there is a lot for us to take away.

And finally: I love playing on this team, for our fans.

Then Ilya Rozanov bursts into his life, and answering questions becomes a little more complicated.

or: Shane Hollander, interviewee, throughout the years.
