Summary
Jan Van Eck has managed to get his way out of imprisonment, relying on one of his fellow merchants to help him as he struggles through his losses.
Refusing to let Kaz ruin his life, he requests the presence of 'The Raven' an infamous leader of criminals. He intends to hire The Raven to ruin Kaz Brekker and his reputation, but things aren't as they seem.
____________________________________________________________________Simply; Someone is hired to ruin Kaz's life, but they wind up ruining Jan Van-Ecks life for the second time instead.

Tiergan sat before him, dark skin ashen in the lowlight. He leaned forward, hands clasped in his lap. His eyes met Fitz’s. “Fitz, I understand that you need to find someone to blame for the way Alvar’s turned out, something or someone to explain why he’s done what he’s done… and correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you found the answer a long time ago, and you just don’t want to accept it.” Fitz felt anger rear its ugly head in his chest. Great- so now Tiergan thought he knew more about Alvar than Fitz did, after seeing two memories??
OR

Who is Kaz Brekker?
Most people would say he's a delinquent, cold-hearted, ruthless, bastard of the barrel.
Most people don't know that Kaz Brekker is a lonely child forced to grow up in foster care after his parents died, forced to grow up in foster care alone after Jordie died, forced to do whatever it takes to survive, even if that means putting a few people into the hospital.
Kaz Brekker has been abused again and again and again by the people he's told will protect him, people he's told will love him and treat him kindly and fairly.
Kaz Rietveld was a nine-year-old boy who had just lost his parents when he moved to live with Jakob Hertzoon, the first of many people who will let him down. Luckily for Kaz Brekker, that kid is dead, he died alongside Jordie that day, and now Kaz Brekker is moving in with the Fahey Family, Mr. Fahey, Jesper, and Nina, people who want to help Kaz get over his past trauma's but ever since Jordie died all Kaz knows is that appearances can be deceiving and he vowed to never trust another foster family ever again.
