Hugo was a master of hiding his feelings. Hell, he'd been doing it for years and at this point it came naturally.
He liked to have things in control. Control meant a quick and easy mission. Control meant no matter what kind of trouble came his way, he'd be easily able to slip out of it. Control meant he would be fine.
Emotions were easy to control. Any rude insult or harmful jab at his past slid off him like water. As far as he was concerned, some random weirdo commenting on his past of being a homeless orphan was nothing more than an enemy's cheap tactic to poke at vulnerability to win.
It was only to his horror after the argument with Varian, he realized he didn't have said emotions under as tight a wrap as he had thought.

He had had a conversation with Nuru about a week ago, slightly tipsy and sitting around the campfire. He had told her that he had a crush on Hugo.
He’d like to say it was all a coincidence, but he knows Nuru too well. The princess is fucking smart.
