There was a brief pause, as if both of them were struggling to find the right words to say, until—

    "You cut your hair?"

    "You're a woman?"

What the fuck. "What the fuck?"

After years of being apart, Phainon realises that her cute childhood friend, Mydeimos, is not a boy, but a (really hot) woman with eyes only for her.

"She’s pretty, isn’t she? And you’re probably the only person on this planet that can touch her. What if she gets the wrong idea, or something? What if you…”

An incredulous laugh bubbles up in Mydei’s throat, but he bites his tongue to keep it down. “Are you stupid?” he asks, putting his free hand on Phainon’s hip and pressing him back. One step, two, they stumble. He pushes Phainon into the door, coming close. “Do you think I fall in love with everyone I meet?”

“How could you?” Phainon asks, unsteady, hands flexing on Mydei’s waist. “When you didn’t fall in love with me?”

    Summary

The second part of Thus was The Promise Wrought.

When Mydei offered his body to the ancient rite, reshaping his organs and bones to cradle a child, he did it not as a king in dire need of heir but as a man in love. And Phainon, always at his side, loved him the more for it.

What followed was far from a fairytale: morning sickness, random cravings, a kingdom to rule, and a child who cried louder than explosion. But between ink-stained letters, cookie crumbs and sleep deprivation, between scraped knees and lullabies, they built something lasting.

Not a perfect world. But a gentle and peaceful one, just like the promise they once made.

    “Why do they throw flowers?”

“They’re well-wishes,” Phainon answers. “Crocuses are for new beginnings, cyclamen are for love, colchicum for fidelity. They’re blessing the marriage.”

Mydei’s hand shifts a little lower, warm fingers circling Phainon’s wrist. “Your traditions are terribly sentimental.”

“Romantic,” Phainon corrects. “Just call them romantic.”
