Summary
Nothing good comes from someone pounding on the door at two in the morning.
He pulls the door open mid knock, ready to lay into whomever the hell has decided that the middle of the night is a reasonable time for a visit, but the words turn to ash on his tongue when he finds Eddie standing there, his fist still raised to pound on the door as Buck swings it open.
And Eddie looks like shit.
It's not even the bruises blooming up his arms and spreading over his cheekbone. It's not the split and swollen knuckles that are so prominently on display with how his fist is still floating in midair between them.
It's the nearly wild look that's burning in his eyes — pain and sorrow and grief that's smoldering just beneath the surface, threatening to explode, to consume him completely.

Dick had known to expect this. “Thank you, Reverend Mother,” Dick says respectfully, “but I cannot follow that path.”
The Mother Superior nods. He looks unsurprised. “Then perhaps,” he says, “you would be interested to hear of another opportunity.” From the papers on his desk, the abbess removes a single sheet. “Are you familiar with Captain Wayne?”
Dick accepts a position as governess to eight war-orphans, adopted by millionaire and WW1 flying ace Captain Bruce Wayne. The rest is inevitable.

Summary
The first time Buck had met Pepa, she’d described Eddie as a saint, and she’d been right. Buck may be fuzzy on his Art History eras, but he can conjure up plenty of images of shirtless saints, and Eddie, abs adorned with sparkles and glowy mood lighting framing his face, looks more saintly than ever before.
Eddie motions Buck over. “Come meet my friends!” He turns to the woman petting his hair. “This is my friend, Buck!”
The woman eyes Buck suspiciously, but without judgment. “You the baby daddy?” she asks, not unkindly.
Before Buck has a chance to say no, or yes, or what?— Eddie’s face crumples, and he turns to the drag queen forlornly, muttering, “I don’t have a baby anymore,” before face-planting into her breastplate with a sob.
The queen squeezes his shoulder and shushes him gently. “I know, sweetie, it’s okay. You can be our baby.”
“My baby’s all grown up.”
“It’s gonna be alright.”

After, sometimes he’ll stand in the shower and scrub at his skin until it’s pink, but he can never really get rid of the feeling of hands all over him, crawling into his skin. Other times he can barely stand to be under the water, mind flashing back to being stuck in a raging flood, unable to breathe.

He’d been at Maddie’s side when Buck was struck by lightning, when she found him after the tsunami, when she barreled into his hospital room after the ladder truck crushed his leg, when they found Chim on their wedding day, and– and he’d never heard her sound like that. “Maddie, what–”
“They got Buck. Buck’s gone. They took him, they took Evan.”
The world stopped. And it didn’t keep turning. Because– Buck.
“What?” His voice sounded faint to his own ears, cracked, broken, shattered, and Chris jerked to look at him again, dropping the blankets clenched in his fists and turning to face him as his feet slid off the couch to the floor. Fear shone in his eyes, and– and Eddie’d forgotten how well he could read his reactions now.
