Helena Potter had never been a particularly lucky person - her entire life story was more than enough proof of that. Summary
After the trip to Buckingham Palace, Sherlock finds out that maybe John's family background was different than he'd thought.
A series of AUs where ONE fact gets changed and then everything else changes in its wake--all while keeping as much canon-compliance as possible (army doctor, invalided home, alcoholic sister, crime-solving with Sherlock). Most of them more or less take place between the Great Game and the ASIB Christmas party. Each can be read on its own, but (if only to keep track of my thought process) it's probably helpful to read them in sequence.

Summary
Dream had become so used to his sister's smile, her warmth, that he could not imagine life without her. But just like Dream dreamed, and Desired had desires, Death could die. And so she did, moving on while he was imprisoned and leaving a familiar replacement to continue on with her work. But it wasn't just losing her that hurt the most. It was learning that all of his siblings knew and none of them reached out to warn him. Instead leaving him to find out when he was at his lowest, stuck feeding some pigeons and looking for a face that had long since passed.
When Hob had walked into that pub in 1389 he didn't know he was being set up as a replacement. Didn't even know of the arrangement until she sat at his table in 1989. He, eventually, understood. Life was beautiful and ever changing, but it was also heavy. And grew heavier still when carrying the weight of others. They will be fine, he promised. The family. The whole world. Every living thing. It would all be fine.
Rest now, he said, I'll take it from here.

What Dream does not know - Hob Gadling contracted The Sleeping Sickness, and after not perishing, was captured to be experimented on and tortured.
When Dream finds out - he stops at nothing to not only deliver revenge on those who hurt his friend (and more, so much more), but Torment.
