Summary
The payday alone would have been reason enough to pull this job, Ed had thought. Never mind how eager Stede had been to give it a go. And combined with what it would mean for Izzy, for what Ed would be able to offer him... It would have been well worth the effort of slightly breaking his own ship, if all went to plan.
But then, maybe he'd forgotten just how rarely things ever went to plan for the three of them.

Summary
Ed's head spins with the pain and the first dark tendrils of genuine panic. If he can't get the bullet out…
But there is no if. No other option. Either he sorts himself out, or he dies where he's lying, and leaves Izzy trapped forever in the mainframe of an empty ship, drifting through the black until the day the Anne's power cells fail and take Iz with them.
Ed picks up the scalpel again.

Summary
The EMP goes off with an understated pop followed by a brief and nearly-imperceptible whine, but the effect is instantaneous. The two security drones hit the ground, and so does Izzy.
Ed's boots ring out against the floor panels as he throws himself down the corridor at a dead sprint. Get up, he silently demands, as the poorly-recycled air burns in his lungs. Fucking get up! But Izzy remains an unmoving black shape crumpled on the grating.

Summary
Izzy wakes in a pitch-black room with a leather-clad palm over his mouth and a blade at his throat.
“Not a sound, Hands,” a rough voice growls. And Izzy silently curses his own stupidity and Edward’s in equal measure. “I’ve got a proposition for you.”
It's not the first time a man with too much greed and far too little sense has attempted to take Blackbeard's ship for himself—in the five or so years since Edward had taken the name, a number of fools had tried. But no man had yet been fool enough to seek Izzy’s help in the matter.

Summary
“You always used to stay,” Edward says, “on nights like these.”
Nights like these. Nights where thick clouds and driving rain blotted out the moon and stars, turning the Queen Anne into the only real and solid thing in an endless sea of black. Nights when the entire world was reduced to a creaking ship and rain spattering against the windows, to Edward’s pain and Izzy’s attempts at distraction, to a warm cabin sweet with opium smoke. Those nights had been common, a lifetime ago.
But this isn’t the Queen Anne. And Edward hardly needs Izzy for distraction now.

Summary
The aftermath of a mission isn't usually like this.
But then, this was no usual mission.
The others are lost in their remembered worlds, repressing like talented amateurs, and it’s painful to watch. Bruce is no great actor, but he has eaten repression for so long now that it’s effortless; no-one can see how galling it tastes to him. These people, though. They can’t hide it from him, not him. He’s a professional.

Summary
“Call me Jim. I’ve heard a lot about you in the last hour. Is it true that you’ve suggested looking into the Terran botanical process for oxygen production as a model for mechanical air recycling?”
Spock lifts one perfect brow. “That is not generally the first question I am asked by people aware of my work.”
“Jim and air have a history,” Uhura says, and Jim could strangle her until he sees something change in Spock’s gorgeous, gorgeous eyes about it.
“Air and I are on perfectly fine terms.” He self-consciously touches the mouthpiece of his breather, which is in its magnet holster at his hip just like it always has been, to really punctuate what a massive liar he is.

Summary
Spock knows what humans say about him. His ears are too keen to miss the whispers. He has been referred to as Kirk’s pet. As his servant. As his bodyguard. As his shadow.
A relationship does not exist among humans that corresponds to what Spock is to Kirk. In Earth’s past, perhaps, it did, but it has been lost. He has read enough Earth literature to have found it in Lancelot and Arthur, Sam and Frodo, Olivier and Roland. But there is no name for it, no reference to search for. And when humans recognize it for what it is, there is this trace of disgust. Because it is unequal. Because they feel it is shameful to be in the position that Spock is.
It is the deeply held loyalty of one man toward another. It need not be returned; most often it is not, or not in the same way. Spock felt some of that for Pike. But what he feels for Kirk staggers him with its strength. It speaks deeply to an instinct within him which he cannot deny. Not that he chooses to protect Kirk. Not that he wants to follow him. That he must. That he will. That, in the second between danger and thought, his body moves on its own.
